The Elk River is the second in a line of Sassafras-class tugs. Built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland, she is 94 (ft) long, with a 32 (ft) beam, and a depth of 13' (ft). She is nearly identical to her sister the Sassafras. The Elk River is rated at 3,000 horsepower. She is powered by two Caterpillar 3512 diesel engines turning two Rolls Royce 87' four bladed propellers. Her main engines are rated at 1,500 hp each with Twin Disc MG 6500 6.04:1 ratio gears. Electrical power is provided by two John Deere 99 k-W generators.
