Senesco Marine

Rhode Island’s Official Sailing Education Vessel, the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, arrived at Senesco Marine in North Kingstown, R.I. on December 12, 2011. At Senesco Marine, one of the Northeast’s premier shipyards for new construction and vessel repair, the non-profit organization Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI) will continue building the 196-foot (sparred length) steel-hulled ship, the first full-rigged ship to be built in the U.S. in over 100 years. Senesco Marine will undertake all the major construction of the ship including the fabrication of fuel and wing tanks; installation of the lower deck as well as machinery, engines, and generators; fabrication of the new topsides, weather deck, bulwarks and transom; and the stepping of the ship’s three masts.

SSV Oliver Hazard Perry will stand 13 ½ stories tall when she is completed in 2014 and will sail from her home port of Newport as a symbol for all of Rhode Island and as an ambassador for the state’s seafaring heritage and its innovations in education at sea.
